Resonance Healing

The idea that healing may be affected either from the inside out, or from the outside in, is not a new concept; but the terminology is new. Modern trademark and copyright laws have created a market in trademarking other people's ideas and charging them to use them. The AMA and FDA have also confused things by creating lists of terms that may only be used by MDs. Thus, practices that used to be universally recognised by common terms are now represented by a bewildering array of labels and definitions that end up functioning more like practitioner brand names, than useful descriptors. Unfortunately, we too are affected by these practices, and so find ourselves obliged to employ generic terms for specific practices.

A person may heal either from the inside out or from the outside, in. Remedies heal the body from the inside, eventually permeating the ethereal body. Spiritual centring heals the body from the outside in; 'sinking in' from the auric to the corporeal body, and eventually manifesting as wellness, and an enhanced sense of well-being. We call the forms of spiritual centring that achieve this effect, 'Resonance Healing'.

Types of Resonance Healing

All types of resonance healing follow this basic principle, whether they are called 'energy healing', 'hands-on healing', 'magnetic healing', 'Faery healing', 'Spirit healing', or some other name. There are many traditions of healing and each follows the philosophy, methods, and procedures prescribed by specific cultures in specific lands. For instance, 'Faery Healing' (on offer through the ADO Hedgerow School via the link at left) teaches the philosophy and methods traditional to Western Europe during a period of approximately 10,000 years (Stone to Bronze Ages); whereas Reiki Healing teaches the philosophy and methods recently reclaimed and developed in Japan which derive from direct transmission and from Sanskrit texts. A parallel tradition of healing appears in Tibet, with some variations to accommodate the different landscape, history, and culture of Tibetan peoples. While most of our teachings center on Faery (see link at left), we are also accomplished in some of the Eastern forms of meditation and healing. It is these courses that we would like to offer you here.

Reiki Healing

('Spiritual Life Force': From the Japanese, 'rei' - unseen or spiritual + 'ki' - energy or life force)

"Reiki" is an ancient healing modality reclaimed by a Japanese Tendai Buddhist and Kiko (Japanese 'Qigong') practitioner named Mikao Usui in 1922 following a 21-day retreat on Mount Kurama. Usui received a direct transmission of the knowledge and spiritual power to apply and attune others to the Reiki source energy during this period of profound contemplation, fasting, and prayer. In April, 1922, Usui founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing Society) in Tokyo. Usui taught over 2000 students to use Reiki. 16 of his students continued their training to reach the equivalent to the Western third degree, or master level. He died in 1926. The term 'Reiki' may refer to Usui's therapeutic method of healing (or its derivatives), the act of healing, or the healing energy itself. While the concept of a 'spiritual life force' is universal, the method of Usui Method of Reiki Healing is specific to Usui reiki shiki ryoho.

Reiki teaches that the universal 'life force' energy (usually equated with Chinese 'qi') can be accessed to induce a healing effect; Reiki energy is 'non-dualistic' or 'non-polar' energy. Reiki brings about healing on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. Healing may occur in any or all of these realms in a single treatment, without need of any conscious direction by either the practitioner or the recipient. Because the Reiki is drawn not from the practitioner, but from the Source, it is considered safe to use regardless of the condition of the recipient, and is without harmful side-

effects. It can be used in combination with any other form of allopathic or alternative treatment or medicine; although caution is exercised in cases where healing may interfere with prescribed dosages of medicines to control chronic conditions (such as insulin to treat diabetes). Reiki draws on the energy from the Universe, which is inexhaustible; thus practitioners are not depleted by giving the treatments, but as channels receive some benefit themselves. Because Reiki enhances the natural healing processes of its recipient without need of conscious understanding or belief, it can also be used on other living organisms such as animals and plants. Reiki 'Distance healing' uses special symbols to form a temporary connection between practitioner and recipient by which the Reiki energy is sent. Reiki can even be sent to a specific point in time (past or future). With sufficient focus and intention on the part of the practitioner, it can be channeled not only through the hands but using the breath or vision.

Treatment proceeds with the practitioner placing his hands on or near the recipient in various positions and holding for 3 to 5 minutes before moving to the next position. Hand positions give a general coverage of the head, the front and back of the torso, the knees and feet. Between 12 and 20 positions are used, with the whole treatment lasting 45 to 90 minutes. Some practitioners use a fixed set of hand positions. Others use their intuition to guide them as to where treatment is needed, sometimes prefacing treatment with a 'scan' of the recipient to identify target areas. The intuitive approach might also lead to individual positions being treated for much shorter or longer periods of time.

Recipients report feeling warmth or tingling in the area being treated, a state of deep relaxation, and an immediate sense of general well-being, although emotional releases can also occur. Instantaneous 'cures' are not usually observed, as the process of healing needs time to unfold. A series of three or more treatments at intervals of 1 to 7 days is the norm for chronic conditions, or 1 to 4 weeks for general wellness, except in the case of self-treatment where a daily practice is common. The cornerstone of Reiki spiritual practice is a daily one hour self-treatment, conducted within the context of a meditation on the Five  Principles. As well as maintaining physical, mental and emotional well-being, this practice induces spiritual growth and facilitates self-realization.

Reiki energy is accessed by means of an attunement process (a set of one or more initiations), performed by a Reiki Master. Attunement is the only way to gain access to Reiki. Though the effect of the attunement is considered to be permanent, it is not synonymous with 'enlightenment'. Once attuned, the energy flows through the practitioner's hands whenever the hands are placed on, or near, a potential recipient. Whilst the energy is drawn by the recipient's need, the practitioner must have pure intention and be 'present' for the healing to be effective. Diagnosis is unnecessary. Reiki healing flows to the areas where it is most needed, activating or enhancing the natural healing processes; thus, Reiki is described as an 'intelligent' form of energy. The simplicity of Reiki means that it can be taught to children.

Practitioners of Reiki do not consider it to be a religion as neither belief, nor non-belief in a deity affects the flow of healing. In a typical whole-body Reiki treatment,[59] the practitioner asks the recipient to lie down, usually on a massage table, and relax. Loose, comfortable clothing is usually worn during the treatment. The practitioner might take a few moments to enter a calm or meditative state of mind and mentally prepare for the treatment, which is usually carried out without any unnecessary talking.

Levels:

Reiki Level I

Teaches the basic theories and procedures of how to work with Reiki energy. The channel through which Reiki energy passes to the practitioner is opened through four "attunements" given to the student by the teacher. Students learn traditional hand placement positions that are thought to be most conducive to the healing process in a whole body treatment. Upon completion of the first degree course, the participant can treat himself and others with Reiki. Duration: 2 days, Cost: $80 USD

Reiki Level II

The student learns the use of three symbols which enhance the healing effect and allow for distance healing. Another attunement is given which further increases the student's capacity to channel Reiki, as well as empowering the use of the symbols. Upon completion, the student can perform distance healings. Prerequisite: Reiki Level I, Duration: 2 days, Cost: $160 USD

Reiki Level III: Master Level

This training qualifies the student as a Reiki master. Students learn the master-level symbol and practice the attunement process. Upon completion of training, the new Reiki Master can attune other people to Reiki and teach the three degrees of Reiki. Prerequisites: Reiki Levels I & II, Duration: To be Determined by Teacher, Cost: $160 USD. (In the case of comprehensive training, the third level is often broken into two or three smaller stages of attunements and teaching.)

[NOTE: Students on the traditional path may be asked to wait up to a year or more after the first level, before being allowed to learn the second degree. Several years of practice may be required thereafter before the practitioner may progress to the Master level. Although Reiki can be taught via Home Study, the results are not as powerful. There is no substitute for experience and patient mastery of any art.]

Summary

Reiki has not been extensively studied by mainstream medicine and its effectiveness has not been objectively proven. Some claims have been made for a scientific basis in electromagnetic fields, but this remains controversial. However, there is anecdotal evidence for the effectiveness of Reiki and a small number of preliminary scientific studies have been reported, tentatively indicating that Reiki does have an effect over and above that of a placebo. In the United States there are currently legal constraints upon practicing Reiki as a 'treatment' for illness, since practitioners of all forms of medicine must be licensed by the AMA and FDA. (An indication of the efficacy of alternative medicines is the number of medical doctors now enrolling for training. Ironically, under current US law the people from whom they are learning must become MDs in order to continue practicing as Healers.)
